Sibambisene Mama’s Club is a Mdantsane-based non-profit organisation made up of 33 elderly women who do beadwork and play sport.
The senior citizens, aged 60 years and upwards, are busy preparing for the upcoming Golden Games that will take place next month in King William’s Town in August.
“We have united the elderly in our community and they are now aware of their rights. They now are living a healthy independent lives,” said Sibambisene Mama manager Nontsikelelo Tom.
Tom said they are promoting healthy lifestyles and independence for the elderly, who always end up being victims of loan sharks due to financial dependence.
“We want to protect the old from abuse, to build trust amongst community members, to assist the sickly and give them necessary support.
“We gather at the community centre at NU2 in Mdantsane when we do our beadwork, knitting and crocheting. For sport, we gather at the Orlando Stadium, where some of the women practise for the Golden Games,” said Tom.
“I ran the 200m in the last games and came back with a gold medal.
“Our ultimate goal is to participate in the National Golden Games, where we will representing our province,” said elderly athlete Dorothy Nabe.
“We are pleading to the community for any form of donation or sponsorship, as it will assist us with some of the basic needs for the centre,” said Tom.
