East London’s very own Bruce Viaene represented his country at the Venture Paddle Surfing Championships in the US over the past weekend, competing against the best waveskiers in the world.

The contest began on Saturday morning, hosting three paddle surf divisions: Waveski-ing, SUP-ing and Surf Kayaking.

Representing SA, Viaene won his heat in Open Division Round 1 and Round 2, progressing through to the semi-final, where he surfed against French contestant Mathieu Barbarit and Doug Copeland from the US.

Bruce placed second after scoring the highest wave score of the semi final and surfed the Open Final on Sunday morning as well as the Senior Final.

He walked away with fourth place in the Open Division, and a second place in the Seniors Division.

“The waves were incredibly small, but it is was a true honour to surf against the worlds very best in the Open final,” Viaene said.
