The Zwelitsha Business Forum is providing food to homes in need during the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.

Working hand-in-hand with ward committees and other stakeholders, the non-profit organisation is assisting in areas where government and other organisations have difficulty reaching.

“The ZBF members contributed by applying the asset-based community development [ABCD] concept.

“We approached those in the community, including spaza shop owners, and they have heeded the call and continue to assist us in our work,” ZBF member Spokazi Xonxa said.

ZBF chairperson Siyabulela Nakani said the goals of the organisation were centred on uniting small businesses in the area.

“It’s about introducing local opportunities to promote entrepreneurship and build a community that can contribute to the local economy,” Nakani said.

ZBF’s first project involved serving meals to 75 households in Zone 3 and 200 meals in Zone 2 last Sunday, with 80 meals served in Zone 5 on Monday.

The meals were prepared and packaged by ZBF members.

FARGO CHARITY AND EVENTS, another NPO run by local student Abongile Mqalo, came on board to assist.

“Through conversations I’ve had with my neighbour, I decided to take part in this initiative.

“I have done quite a few soup kitchens on my own elsewhere, so it made sense to join them,” Mqalo said.
