Merrifield’s Class of 2021 gathered at the clubhouse last week to celebrate their 100% pass rate following the release of the IEB results.
Addressing the pupils, Merrifield executive head Dr Guy Hartley expressed his pride in their achievement.
“We are immensely proud of what you have achieved.
“If you think about it, you’ve had two years of real difficult circumstances [due to Covid-19] and you’ve come through with flying colours,” he said.
“Arguably these are our best results in the 19 years we have been writing the IEBs.” In addition to the 100% pass rate, Merrifield also achieved a 98% Bachelor pass rate with 167 distinctions overall.
Nineteen of the 64 matric pupils earned themselves A aggregates, while 41 achieved an aggregate of 70% or higher.
Lisa van der Heide and Jody Harvey were also placed on the IEB list of Outstanding Achievers for placing in the top 5% in six subjects nationally.
They were two of the three pupils in the province to do so.
“They [Class of 2021] have applied themselves consistently and diligently throughout the year to achieve the individual goals they set themselves.
“They deserve to be rewarded with the brilliant array of grades across the board,” Hartley said.
“Our students leave the school with some enduring values and lifelong skills entrenched. They depart as critical and creative thinkers, ethical reasoners, problem solvers with a strong social conscience and committed to a democratic, open society based on diversity, social justice and fundamental human rights.
“These attitudes and abilities will serve them well in their tertiary education, lifelong learning and careers.”
