On October 8, local soccer teams came out to support the legacy of late sporting hero Reggie Moodaly in an inaugural festival held in his honour.
Moodaly and his forefathers played a pivotal role in the development and founding of key local teams Pride of India, Merchants, Stars of India, and Saints, which took part in the day.
Moodaly’s family founded and played for these teams across generations and his grandchildren are continuing this legacy.
The eleven-a-side soccer festival included participation at Under 10, U12, U14, U16 and senior team levels, in a round-robin format.
Saints coach and manager, Charles Pretorius, said the festival was a fitting tribute to Moodaly’s life.
“He was one of the best strikers to ever grace this North End field,” said Pretorius.
He said Moodaly was a leader, mentor, friend, and fierce competitor and that young players participating in the tournament should aspire to leave the same legacy.
Moodaly was instrumental as treasurer of Merchants for 23 years, and as a player, assisted in the development of junior soccer in the late ‘60s.
When he became a senior player, and later a coach, this saw the dominance of Merchants during the ‘80s and ‘90s.
He also played for the Border side before being promoted to manager and selector of the provincial team.
His grandson, Keagan Moodaly, and daughter, Michelle Moodaly, said the family hoped the festival would shine a light on the contributions the family has made to soccer in the Eastern Cape.
“Remembering local people serves as recognition and appreciation for their sacrifices and contributions made to the community. It also serves to encourage younger folk to follow suit,” the family said, thanking all who played a role in ensuring the festival’s success.
