EN GARDE: Antonio Banderas voices the swashbuckling hero in ‘Puss In Boots: The Last Wish’. Picture: SUPPLIEDGenre: Animation, fantasy, adventure
A sign that a movie is worth the watch is when it is enjoyed by adults despite being marketed to children.
Action-packed, hilarious, and brilliantly animated Puss in Boots: The Last Wish is the perfect example.
Set after the events of Shrek Ever After (2010), it follows swashbuckling hero Puss in Boots (voiced by Antonio Banderas) as he journeys to find the mystical Last Wish of the Wishing Star to restore eight of his nine lives.
He teams up with Kitty Softpaws (voiced by Salma Hayek Pinault) and an unlikely new puppy friend Perrito (voiced by Harvey Guillén).
However, the trio has to race against criminals Big Jack Horner and Goldilocks and her three bears, who are also after the star.
Puss must also avoid the mysterious hooded Death who wants to kill him while he is clinging to his last life.
But before Puss finds out about the star, he falls into depression and gives up on the only life he has ever known, and buries his boots, cape, and hat.
He even accepts life as a house cat for a woman who obsessively takes care of hundreds of felines.
A dejected Puss lets himself go, letting his hair become unruly and gaining weight.
The humor and childish antics, along with somewhat darker themes such as coping with depression and anxiety, reach audiences young and older.
Overall, the latest adventure is great fun, whether you are a fan of the Shrek movie franchise or not.
Puss in Boots: The Last Wish is now showing at local cinemas.
