This week we chat with Mark Plumstead about how he turned his passion into a source of income by selling various locally sourced natural products.
What products/services do you offer?
I make different types of jams; pineapple, tomato, and grape among others. I also make ginger beer and pickled onions.
When and how did your business start?
I started making chilli sauce many years ago. That was all I did for a long time. Now over the last few years, I have added more pickles and various items to my list.
What inspired you to start your business?
I lost my job and haven’t been able to find one. I decided to sell my jams to make money.
What makes your preservation recipes different?
All my products are preservative-free. I make them using natural methods.
How many people do you work with?
At the moment, I do everything by myself
What do you think sets you apart from other similar businesses in the area?
I try to buy all ingredients from local vendors.
What are some of the challenges you have faced and how did you overcome them?
My flat burnt down a few years ago and I have had to move in with my father. It has been tough ever since.
Do you have any proud moments that you have had in your business so far?
I have won a few awards at the PE Chilli Festival over a few years.
What advice do you have for someone who is interested in a similar line of business?
I would say only do it if you love it and have a passion for it, because the financial rewards are not very big.
Is there anything else that you would like our readers to know?
I just want people to understand that just because I am selling my goods in the supermarket parking area, does not mean what I sell is inferior.
How can our readers get hold of you?
