Sibabalwe Salmon is the only athlete from Cambridge High School to qualify for the SA Schools Athletics Championships that will be taking place in Germiston, Gauteng later this year.
Salmon qualified by competing in the 400m U7 race at the Eastern Cape Athletics Championship in Gqeberha earlier this month.
“I am very happy and excited to have qualified.
“It is such a privilege to go represent my school.
“It just shows that all the work I put into my training has paid off and wasn’t for nothing.”
The grade 10 pupil only started doing athletics as a sport in the fourth term in 2022 and has already proven himself to be a great athlete.
Salmon’s coach, Amanda Swart, says that Salmon is very deserving of this opportunity because of the type of athlete that he is.
“Siba is a very dedicated and talented student.
“This is his first year in the U7 group. He is always training and he is quite a gym fanatic.
“He spends quite a lot of time training.
“He is also very talented in other sports like rugby,” said Swart.
The Cambridge High School athletes’ team has been doing very well over the last few months.
“Things have been difficult for us since Covid-19 happened. It is only this year that we have been able to get back to our former glory.
“We have a very talented group of athletes.
“We had 10 athletes qualify at the last championships, and they were running personal bests all around. We are getting back to our previous condition and we are all so proud of Siba going to represent us,” said Swart.
