May has been recognised as a time to show love and appreciation to our mothers and mother figures in our lives.

This is the mission that Embrace: Movement for Mother, an organisation for mothers, by mothers, focuses on celebrating the critical role they play, is aiming for.

The organisation will be launching a book titled The Power Trip, a book filled with stories of mothers in the community and highlights the ongoing work that they do.

The book includes stories by 13 members of the Embrace Mamandla Fellowship.

The leader of the movement, Julie Mentor, highlighted the need for this project: “We are taking all the platforms we’re given to talk about the need for improved social protection for mothers and pregnant women, practical breastfeeding support and maternal mental health.”

The book will also feature essays by SA Women’s Commission founder Nobuntu Hlazo-Webstar, SA Medical Research Council senior specialist scientist Dr. Wanga Zembe, DG Murray Trust innovation director Kentse Radebe and independent consultant Carol-Ann Foulis.

The launch will be hosted as two free virtual events. The first will take place on Monday May 29 May at 7:30pm and will be hosted by actress and film producer Salamina Mosese.

The second launch will be on Tuesday May 30 at 12:30pm, moderated by journalist and content creator Mamandla Gaopalelwe Phalaetsile.
