Despite a star-studded cast including Gabrielle Union and Keith Powers, and high-budget cinematography, The Perfect Find falls short of reinvigorating the romcom genre.
The first half of the plot is revealed in the opening credits and its adaptation into a film adds little of the charm of the novel it is based on.
After a public breakup and a high-profile firing, Jenna returns to New York for a fresh start.
She swallows her pride and asks a former industry rival, Darcy, for a job. Things get complicated when Jenna starts a relationship with and falls in love with Darcy’s son, Eric.
Now Jenna must decide if she is willing to risk her new career for a secret romance with her boss’s much younger son.
Union and Powers are two attractive lead actors who have decent chemistry on screen.
Despite this, the script fails to sell their romance to the viewer. Their interactions are awkward, and their attraction to each other remains unconvincing, and this is exacerbated by scenes with needless bickering.
Their relationship is the main focus of the movie, but the seriousness of their commitment and depth of the relationship is never really explored.
The acting is shockingly mediocre, considering the big names attached to the project.
Union, Gina Torres and D. B. Woodside are well-established actors, and this underwhelming film does nothing to show off their skills.
The final act feels rushed, unrealistic and somewhat unnecessary considering how the relationship between the main characters plays out.
Visually, the movie is great. The stunning shots of New York and the fashion photoshoots are creative and colourful.
Aside from the attractive leads, and a slightly appealing plot, The Perfect Find is just another typical romcom.
