With Women’s Month in full swing, Iphondo EC Opera has an exciting show in store to celebrate female South African opera stars.
Night with the Divas, which will be performed by Ncumisa Garishe and Nokulunga Dlame, is set to be staged at the Guild Theatre on Monday, August 14.
The tribute show will celebrate female opera singers and musicians who have contributed to the well-respected genre in SA, as well as the beauty of opera.
Night with the Divas musical director Jabulile Ngowebo, said the show provided a great opportunity to celebrate SA’s many respected female opera stars.
“With this event, we want to enlighten people that there are women such as Maria Callas, Rene Fleming, SA’s ‘First Lady of Song’ Dr Sibongile Khumalo, Pretty Yende, a young female South African who is making a lot of waves internationally, and others who lifted and are lifting the women’s flag in opera.
“Iphondo EC Opera believes women have that gift to make something spectacular, hence we feel the need to do such an event to celebrate women in opera.
“Iphondo will continue to stage this kind of event every year and make it more a 100% women line-up,” said Ngowebo.
Accompanying Garishe and Dlame will be Kwanele Gingqi and The Chord Master, both men, who are supporting the women’s event.
“Opera music is seen by some as a ‘too formal’ genre and it’s normally what you see mostly on TV or big foreign events,” Ngowebo said.
“But with this event, we want to show our audience that opera can be fun and crazy in a prima donna kind of way.”
Ngowebo said the audience could look forward to powerful and moving performances by Garishe and Dlame, who would perform some of the most loved opera pieces.
Iphondo EC Opera is a newly developing non-profit company that is focused on developing singers and the opera space.
The show starts at 7pm.
Tickets are available at Computicket.
