The FIM Motocross of African Nations Continental Championship will be taking place this weekend in Cape Town and three talented East London riders will be representing SA in their races.
Breece Romans, Riley Geldenhuys and Aden Fisher will aim to bring back gold.
Race duration is 30 minutes plus two laps.
Romans is currently a grade 12 pupil at Selborne College and has represented SA at motocross championships on three occasions so far.
“I started racing at the age of six. I love spending time with friends and family and travelling around the country racing,” Romans said.
“It is challenging to balance school and training but now I get to look forward to the extreme intensity of racing against the best riders on the continent,” he said.
His father, Brett, has enjoyed preparing his son for the tournament.
“It is awesome spending time with my boy as he is in high school, so when we get a chance, I grab it with both hands. Life is short,” Romans senior said.
Eight-year-old Geldenhuys has been racing since he was four years old and with the support of his parents, he will now get to compete against other talented riders.
His mother, Samantha, said it had been a great experience for the whole family, as they support Riley on his journey.
“This is a sport that he loves.
“We are excited to be there as a family, his biggest supporter is his sister, Haylie.
“It has been tough being away from home and travelling nearly every weekend takes a lot out of us but we travel as a family and Riley is very determined and knows what he wants, which makes it easier on us,” Geldenhuys said.
Fisher has been racing, has been racing at the regional championship and has competed in all the MSA Nationals this year, despite being only nine years old.
“When I was six, a friend of mine was selling his bike. That’s when I decided I wanted to race motocross. I love pushing myself to the limit.
“It can be challenging when the conditions are tough. I am looking forward to pushing myself to get a podium position for my country,” Fisher said.
The championship will take place from Friday August 11 to Sunday August 13 at Zone 7- Speedspot in Cape Town.
