Smith, Lawrence turn back years in latest action sequel

ACTION STARS: Will Smith and Martin Lawrence once again star in the latest action film Bad Boys: Ride or Die. Picture: SUPPLIED

Genre: Action, comedy, adventure

Bad Boys: Ride or Die proves that Will Smith and Martin Lawrence’s cult statuses within the cop comedy genre remain unquestioned, as the fourth installment of the franchise sees Smith and Lawrence bring the same level of action, comedy and entertainment to the 1990s classic.

In this film, Mike Lowrey (Smith) and Marcus Bennett (Lawrence) embark on an off-the-record mission to clear the name of their late police captain, who has posthumously been accused of being linked to corrupt dealings.

The duo find themselves facing off with the drug cartel and a handful of corrupt cops, forcing them to handle the matter using unorthodox methods. Lowrey reunites with his estranged prisoner son Armando (Jacob Scipio), who reluctantly helps them with their mission.

Martin and Smith still have great chemistry on screen.

Their lighthearted bickering shows the years of friendship between the pair, indicative of their real-life friendship.

Dennis McDonald returns in the iconic role of Reggie, reprising a role he played in Bad Boys 2 (2003).

At the time Reggie was trying to date Marcus’ daughter, whereas now, he is married to her, with a baby on the way.

He is also a marine staff sergeant and seems to be undermined by Marcus. He redeems himself in an intense action scene where he protects his family using his skills as a marine sergeant.

One of the best things about this movie is the camera work.

Every shot is brilliant, creative and meticulously thought out.

The whole movie is visually appealing. Some of the shots are so distinguished that viewers will be left wondering how they were done.

The filmmakers incorporate innovative drone camera techniques, slow motion moments and panning shots, resulting in a visually dynamic and immersive experience.

Imagine exhilarating fight scenes filmed from unique angles, or breathtaking aerial shots that showcase the action’s grand scale.

The action shots are very reminiscent of the original Bad Boys movie. It has the right amount of car chases, explosions, fight scenes, shootouts and stunt work.

The only criticism of the film is the plot. It has too many holes, and there are quite a few questions that are left unanswered.

The main plot of the story is that Marcus and Mike are the bad guys and are on the run, which feels unrealistic, but it also predicts a happy ending because the audience already knows that they’re innocent.

Smith and Lawrence have not let age get the better of them and could easily make another action-packed movie, but if this is the last Bad Boys film they ever make, the franchise will have ended on a high note.

Bad Boys: Ride or Die is available for streaming on Amazon Prime Video
