GO Review – Despicable Me 4

FAMILY FUN: Supervillain-turned-good-guy Gru and his family have fun in the latest sequel in the franchise, ‘Despicable Me 4’. Picture: SUPPLIED

Genre: Animation

Despicable Me 4 has solidified itself as a movie sequel full of fun and laughter for the whole family, with an engaging storyline, improved animation, and entertaining subplots.

The voice cast of this movie consists of big names like Steve Carell, Will Ferrell, Sofia Vergara, Joey King, Miranda Cosgrove, Kristin Wiig, and Pierre Coffin, whose excellence as voice-over artists bring these classic characters to life anew, despite the franchise being around for more than 10 years.

Gru is no longer the villain he once was as he now lives his days fighting the bad guys alongside law enforcement. In this fourth installment, Gru and his family are forced to move to a safe house to get away from his old rival Maxime Le Mal.

The family assumes new identities and struggles to adapt to their new life which makes for scenes packed full of hilarity, including the girls’ inability to maintain the ruse of their new identities, the comic attempts of the family’s neighbour, Poppy Prescott, to follow in Gru’s villainous footsteps, and a group of Gru’s Minions becoming superheroes and causing chaos.

Another fun subplot is Gru’s complicated relationship with his baby boy, which brings a new and unexplored side to Gru’s character, which new parents, especially, will appreciate.

The Minions and their crazy shenanigans will bring laughter to the little ones watching as they remain just as cute, lovable, funny and chaotic as they were in the previous films.

This film continues the journey that the other movies started, of bringing joy and laughter to the whole family.

The animation style of the film has improved greatly, and the experience of watching it at the cinemas in 3D will add to the fun. The film does have many protagonists and storylines to follow, but each one is funny and entertaining without compromising the fluidity of the plot and the jokes are all funny and age appropriate for children.

For a fun family viewing experience, Despicable Me 4 is the perfect movie. While Gru has evolved from a villain to a hero dealing with family life, the humour, especially from the Minions, remains a highlight.

Despite having multiple storylines, the movie is well-balanced, making it an enjoyable experience for both children and adults.

Despicable Me 4 is available to watch at Hemingways Movies.
