GO Review : Twisters

SURVIVING TORNADOES: Glen Powell and Daisy Edgar-Jones star in the new disaster film, ‘Twisters’. Picture: SUPPLIED

Genre: Adventure, drama, action

Continuing the era of remakes and sequels comes another blast from the past. This standalone sequel comes twenty-eight years after the release of the 1996 film Twister.

The movie was a hit when it first came out and has had a loyal fanbase since then, and the new film seems to follow in the same path. The sequel follows Kate Cooper (played by Daisy Edgar-Jones), who retires from storm chasing after tragically losing her friends in a devastating encounter with a tornado. She soon gets lured back by her friend Javi (Anthony Ramos) to test out a new tracking system that could help save lives.

She soon crosses paths with Tyler Owens (Glen Powell), a charming but reckless social-media superstar who thrives on posting his storm-chasing adventures. As storm season intensifies, Kate, Tyler and their competing teams find themselves in a fight for their lives as they fight for survival against the storms.

While the main focus is the tornado activity, the story still manages to focus on human elements such as ethics and morals, friendship, and romance.

Powell and Edgar-Jones have good chemistry and play the enemies-to-lovers trope well. There are some emotional moments, but the focus is more on the action, rather than on character growth.

The performances are solid, with the cast doing well with what they’re given, but there is a lack of connection felt to the characters.

The plot is straightforward but has quite a few moments of surprise and excitement. The opening scene is good at building suspense. As the film continues, there are some predictable moments, but the tension and action keep the audience hooked.

The special effects and CGI are incredible. The tornadoes are realistic and terrifying, which makes the action so much more exciting to watch.

The destruction is portrayed in a way that feels believable and realistic, making it one of the movie’s strongest points.

While it might not be the most original film out there, it more than makes up for it with its entertainment value. If you’re a fan of disaster movies, this one is worth watching.

Twisters is available for streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
