Elderly residents enjoy early ‘Christmas’

On August 4, the residents of Ebenezer Frail Care Home in Gonubie were treated to a heartwarming “Christmas in August,” thanks to the incredible generosity of the Dezzy’s Pub family.

What began as a friendly competition among the regulars at Dezzy’s Pub quickly blossomed into a powerful display of community spirit.

For some time, Dezzy’s Pub, located on Main Street, has been hosting a light-hearted “cook-off” competition, where patrons showcase their culinary skills. The winner, decided by simple voting, earns the title of “cook of the day.”

Last month’s cook-off took a special turn when Alan Shelly of the Dezzy’s Pub family announced a generous donation of therapeutic equipment to Ebenezer Frail Care Home. The donation, delivered in a convoy of three LDVs filled with mobility aids and essential items, sparked a wave of additional contributions from the local and global community.

Locals and former Gonubie residents from as far as Cape Town, America, and Australia contributed items such as pots, pans, blankets, and bedding.

The excitement continued as Mama Mitch of Mitch’s Braaitique and Catering prepared a delicious three-course meal for the residents, while DJ Julius provided live music, creating a festive atmosphere.

The highlight of the day was the arrival of Shelly and the Dezzy’s Pub family at Ebenezer with their convoy of gifts.

The residents and staff welcomed them with open arms, marking the culmination of a truly memorable “Christmas in August.”

The staff at Ebenezer were praised for their exceptional care, and the day concluded with Dezzy’s Pub hosting a feast for its patrons, with any surplus food donated to the homeless.

In just one week, the Dezzy’s Pub family raised more than R14,000 for Ebenezer Frail Care Home, a testament to the power of community and the often-overlooked generosity of everyday people.

Dezzy’s Pub has proven that it is more than just a gathering place — it is a family that supports each other and those in need.
