GO Review – Fly Me to The Moon

STAR COUPLE: Scarlett Johansson and Channing Tatum star in the new Apple TV+ film ‘Fly Me to The Moon’. Picture: SUPPLIED

Genre: Comedy, romance

The new release, Fly Me to the Moon, is a fictional retelling of the famous Apollo 11 moon landing and succeeds in humanising a historically significant event that changed the course of global history.

The plot follows the relationship between marketing specialist Kelly Jones (Scarlett Johansson) and NASA launch director Cole Davis (Channing Tatum), as they are tasked with creating a fictionalised version of the Apollo 11 mission, in case the actual one is not successful, which is a comical spin on the prevailing conspiracy theory that the moon landing of 1969 was faked in a Hollywood studio.

As a result of working closely together, the pair struggles to navigate their blossoming feelings for each other while also working under pressure to fulfill a high-risk national security assignment.

While the film’s main focus is the romance between Kelly and Cole, the story of the Apollo 11 mission is given a spotlight and draws the audience in. It is worth mentioning that the film is very loosely based on real events. So, for the historically accurate story, a documentary would be a better watch.

The romantic aspect of the film does not follow the typical romance tropes, and this adds to the film’s overall appeal.

Johansson and Tatum’s characters have good chemistry and while they’re both focused on their respective jobs, they’re still able to show real care and affection for each other.

The supporting cast is filled with talented actors Woody Harrelson, Ray Romano, Donald Elise Watkins, Joe Chrest, and Colin Jost.

Every scene is intriguing and beautifully shot. The set design, wardrobe, and overall feel of the film transports the audience to the 1960s. One particular scene in the second last act will keep you glued to your screen in anticipation of how it will end.

If anything, the film may spark renewed interest and appreciation in the actual Apollo 11 mission of 1969.

If you love space and history, and a little bit of romance, this film is a must-watch.

Fly Me to the Moon is available for streaming on Apple TV+.
