Castle Green: Expanding assisted-living options for EL’s aging community

Berea Gardens Retirement Foundation opened their assisted-living complex, Castle Green, in 2013. Situated in Jarvis Road opposite the Lily Kirchmann Complex, Castle Green added another option to the assisted-living facilities on offer at the Foundation.

Originally occupying one property, which was extensively renovated with additional purpose-built units being added, Castle Green expanded onto an adjacent property in 2021 and now comprises 15 assisted-living units in a secure, homely environment.

Founded as a non-profit company in 1974 in response to the plight of many pensioners affected by the abolition of the Rent Control Act, the Foundation has grown steadily to provide a full range of services to over-60’s, including economic and sub-economic accommodation, assisted-living, frail care and a thriving service centre. These services are offered at its various complexes in Jarvis Road as well as at Stirling Lodge in Epsom Road.

Thanks to modern medicine, people are living longer. It is inevitable that most people will experience some of the many challenges associated with ageing.

The Foundation’s assisted-living facilities have been developed and expanded in recognition of the fact that most people who have challenges associated with ageing and are no longer able to live independently, do not require full frail care.

Assistance with the activities associated with normal daily living, including meals, showering and dressing and the control of medication, usually enables a person to maintain a reasonable level of independence. It is this ethos of a reasonable level of independence and dignity that underpins assisted-living.

The Foundation noticed that people who moved into its assisted-living facilities often experienced an improvement in their health and lifestyle. Many of these residents are still going out regularly, preparing some meals for themselves, are actively involved in activities and hobbies, and some are still able to drive.

There are some countries with the financial resources that enable local authorities to provide these services to people in their own homes.

For most people, unfortunately, unless they have significant financial resources of their own or their families can provide this service for them, a professionally run assisted-living facility is their best option.
