East London’s latest 100-year-old resident, Dorothy Campbell was speaking at her centennial birthday celebration this past weekend and said the secret to a long life is to always do your best for other.

Dorothy celebrated her centenary with a special birthday lunch on September 14 in her community of Parkside, surrounded by loved ones.

She has lived through countless historic events, including the global Covid-19 pandemic. Despite the challenges of her time, she remains a symbol of resilience and joy.

Dorothy’s proud granddaughter, Kayleigh Campbell, shared how her grandmother is elated to have reached this significant milestone. “She feels she has lived her life to the fullest and has overcome so much,” Kayleigh said.

When asked what advice Dorothy would give to others, she said simply: “Be happy, give freely, and always do your best for others.”

Dorothy said the most important life lesson she’s learned over the years is: “What you put into life is what you get out of it. And if you honour your parents, your days will be long.” Kayleigh added: “She believes that with God by her side anything is possible.”

A large part of Dorothy’s long, healthy life can be attributed to her active lifestyle. “She wakes up early, takes care of her chores, heads to the market to buy fresh produce, and stays proactive,” Kayleigh said.

For 25 years, Dorothy sold homemade vetkoek at St John’s Road Primary School, bringing joy to many.

She remains an active member of her church community, continuing to inspire those around her with her dedication and positive outlook on life.

Dorothy’s 100th birthday is a testament to a life lived with purpose, love, and faith — a true celebration of a century well spent.
