This week, we chat with Dré Rooi who provides hairdressing for men and women.
What service do you provide?
I do makeup services and hairdressing for men and women.
How and when did you decide to start offering your services?
I fell in love with hair when I was about 14 years old and I’ve been in love ever since.

Which type of hairstyles do you specialise in?
I specialise in most classic hairstyles, as well as hairstyles that are currently trending. I do cutting, colouring, highlights, up-styles, Brazilian, botox and haircare.
What skills or experience does one need to be able to do what you do?
It starts with passion and learning and constantly being willing to experiment with your skill set because hair trends are constantly changing.
Do you work alone?
No, I outsource some services to my niece, Tonia.
How different is it doing men’s hair compared to women’s?
With men’s hair, you mostly follow procedure. Women’s hair requires more effort because women’s styles have more complexity therein.
What are some of your business’s goals or future plans?
I would like to start an academy for young talent to be discovered and honed.
What are some of the most popular styles that you offer?
The most popular styles we are offering at the moment are curtain bangs, face-framing layers, burst fade, mullet, wolf cut and pixie cuts.

Are there any challenges that you have encountered in your line of work, and how do you overcome them?
The industry can get overwhelming at times and the pressure you face as a stylist can be enormous because you are in business for yourself. This can affect your mental wellbeing. It’s imperative to be aware when it becomes too much and then to recalibrate.
What advice do you have for someone who is also interested in starting their own small business?
Start with passion, commitment, and good logistics. If you fall down eight times and get up nine, you’ve made it.
