Four talented artists have joined forces to create stunning pieces of art for the Four Views exhibition, now showing at the Ann Bryant Art Gallery.
The exhibition opened on Thursday November 14 and will run until November 25.
Peter Midlane, Sandra Thomas, Tori Stow and Dorothy du Plessis have previously showcased their work together at Johan Carinus Art Centre at the National Arts Festival in Makhanda, and this exhibition is a continuation of their art journey together.
While Thomas, Midlane and Du Plessis have different perspectives on various portrayals of landscapes, Stow focused on sea creatures.
“I focus on landscapes but not on any specific place,” Du Plessis said.
“I want to convey an atmosphere and feelings of place rather than a specific area.
“My goal is for the viewer to relate to the feeling the paintings generate, they should create their own ‘story’ around the painting.
“I hope the audience leaves our exhibition with a feeling of peace and an appreciation of the wonderful landscape we are privileged to live in.
“I prefer working with oil on board. Canvas has too much give for my taste.
“I like the hard surface of board,” Du Plessis said.
Thomas focused on encapsulating parts of the Eastern Cape that she felt were not as tame as other parts of the country. She said these kinds of exhibitions were necessary to showcase different perspectives of the same places.
“I want people who cannot reach the uninhabited places that I do, to find and explore them through my art. I hope the audience becomes more aware of how valuable pristine spaces are and how important they are to our collective wellbeing.
“There is no one single view of anything, so to exhibit along artists who also explore and express their love of the Eastern Cape with such passion and creativity is wonderful,” Thomas said.
Midlane created oil paintings of the Eastern Capes landscape and captures the burnt orange colours of aloes, the Eastern Cape brush and the bush of the Albany district.
“I am inspired by Eastern Cape landscapes in all their beauty in all seasons. Hopefully, viewers will appreciate the techniques. I am happy to be associated with this group of artists and I hope viewers will walk away inspired by the professionalism of the group,” Midlane said.
