After 35 years of unwavering dedication, Voorpos Primary School deputy principal Marcelle Ferreira has retired, leaving behind a legacy that will be remembered by generations.
Ferreira’s journey with Voorpos began in 1989, when she joined the school as a teacher. She has been an integral part of the school’s evolution from an Afrikaans-medium institution to a dual-medium and finally an English-medium school.
Her ability to adapt and lead through these transitions is a testament to her resilience and vision.
One of her lasting contributions is the school song, which she translated from Afrikaans to English — a change that resonates with the inclusive identity Voorpos now embodies.
In 2013, Ferreira was appointed head of department, where she established curricular protocols that elevated the school’s academic standards. In 2019, she was promoted to deputy principal, a role she embraced with kindness, empathy and determination.
Colleagues and pupils alike fondly recall her steadfast support, whether guiding teachers, championing school initiatives, or ensuring that pupils’ needs were prioritised. Her leadership extended beyond the classroom — she was also a gifted pianist, orchestrating memorable school productions that became highlights of the Voorpos calendar.
Known for her motto, “Work hard, be kind, and amazing things will happen to you,” Ferreira instilled a culture of perseverance and compassion. As the Voorpos family bids her farewell, the school community celebrates a career defined by dedication, creativity, and heartfelt leadership.
“Marcelle has been more than a teacher and leader; she has been the heart of our school,” a staff member said. “Her legacy will inspire us for years to come.”
