Esteemed educator to steer Cambridge ship

Cambridge High School ushers in a new era of leadership with the appointment of Mark Berndt as its principal.

His appointment follows the retirement of longtime principal Spencer Welman, marking a pivotal moment in the school’s rich history.

With 34 years of teaching and administration experience under his belt, Berndt has held various senior management positions at the school, including history teacher, facilitator of the school’s facilities development fund, and until recently, the role of deputy principal of the school.

He takes the helm with a vision to uphold the school’s proud legacy while steering it towards an exciting future.

Berndt said: “I am extremely honoured to have been appointed as the new principal of Cambridge High School.

“I am looking forward to this new challenge.

“I have been a teacher at Cambridge for many years and appreciate and value all that the Cambridge community stands for.”

According to a post on the school’s Facebook page, it is clear his appointment was a no-brainer.

“He has dedicated his entire teaching career to the school and he understands the personality and ethos of Cambridge.

“A man of integrity, he has, as deputy principal, provided the school with strong leadership, both in the classroom and beyond, and he reflects the high priority the school places on working in the best interests of its pupils and preparing for the future as the school continues to strive to maintain all those elusive values we hold dear as epitomised in our school motto, Non Vobis [Not For Ourselves],” the school said.

Past pupils and friends of the school also posted congratulatory messages for the new principal.

Phelisa Rululu said: “Congratulations Mr Berndt. I’m so happy and proud.

“Oh, my esteemed teacher, always so measured and wise.

“May the road rise up to meet you and the wind always be at your back.

“I can’t think of anyone better to steer this ship. May God bless you, keep you and guide you in all your endeavours.”

Bavuyile Mbatha said: “I’m so happy for him and the school.

“I love the discipline he has and instills in all the pupils. Our children are about to be put in line and I’m excited for it.”
