Selborne College, Dale College, the Qonce and East London communities are all mourning the death of coach and teacher Barry Hayidakis, who passed away on Monday January 20 at the age of 50.

Hayidakis is survived by his wife, Carmen, his son, Matthew, his daughter, Kayla, and his parents, Faith and Nolan.

Luke Hickman paid tribute to his father-in-law on behalf of the family.

“Barry was a kindhearted and compassionate man who touched the lives of all who knew him.

“A true people’s person, who was always ready to lend a hand, share a smile, and brighten the day of those around him. He had a deep passion for sports and thoroughly enjoyed socialising, often surrounded by friends and family. Above all, he cherished the time spent with his loved ones, creating memories that will live on in their hearts forever,” Hickman said.

Hayidakis matriculated from Dale College in 1993. While there, Hayidakis was a prominent member of the school’s first cricket and rugby teams. Even after he left school, he continued making a difference as the estate manager at the school. Soon after, he joined Selborne Primary School as a staff member.

He prided himself as an Old Dalian and served as an executive member, and later president of the Old Dalian Union.

A post on the Old Dalian Union Facebook page read: “Barry’s unwavering commitment to the ODU and its mission exemplified the spirit of camaraderie, leadership, and service that defines our community. Throughout his tenure as national president, he worked tirelessly to strengthen the bonds between alumni, foster a sense of unity, and ensure the continued legacy of our cherished institution. As a staunch supporter of the values and traditions of our alma mater, Barry inspired all who knew him with his passion, integrity, and generosity. His presence will be deeply missed, but his legacy will remain an enduring source of inspiration for generations to come.”

A statement on Selborne Primary School’s Facebook page said: “Barry was a kind and selfless individual for whom no effort was ever too great. A devoted family man, he left a lasting impression on all who had the privilege of knowing him. An accomplished sportsman, Barry’s passion extended across many sporting codes, and he played a significant role in his community, both as a competitor and a supporter.

“This passion was evident to all who visited our school, as Barry was fully invested in providing a beautiful campus and playing fields. As a school, we express our heartfelt sorrow at his passing.”

Hayidakis’s friends and acquaintances shared their messages of condolences and anecdotes of their encounters with Hayidakis.

“What a huge loss to the Selborne family. Barry Hayidakis was the Moms of Selborne committee’s right-hand man. Always there to help us move tables, carry stuff, hang lights, and most importantly always with a smile on his face. Rest easy Barry. Hope you and my dad are reminiscing up there about your rugby days in King. Condolences to the staff and his family,” Natasha-Graham Hansel said.

David Russell Hill said: “I am so sorry to hear about Barry. I had the great pleasure of sharing a rugby field with Barry on numerous occasions. He was truly an above average sportsman.”

Genn Harris said: “What devastating news. I had the honour of teaching Barry and having him play in my cricket and rugby sides, at Dale Junior in the mid-1980s. Even then, his respectful gentlemanly attitude was evident. This is so sad. My sincere condolences to his parents, his wife and the extended Hayidakis family. May his soul rest in peace.”
