Merrifield College’s 1st team boys and girls delivered strong performances at two recent water polo tournaments, facing off against some of the country’s top teams.
The boys took part in the Pearson Boys Polo Tour, where they fought hard in their pool matches. They faced tough competition, suffering narrow losses to Paul Roos (3-4) and St Stithians (4-4, lost on shootouts 1-3), and going down to Bishops 2nds (0-9). However, they secured a convincing 7-2 victory over Rondebosch 3rds, finishing 4th in their pool. In the play-offs, the team edged out St Andrews 3rds (5-4) before falling to St Davids 2nds (1-5). They closed their campaign with a hard-fought 4-3 win over Rondebosch 3rds. A standout moment of the tournament was Chris Eva earning his 100th cap and making 51 saves throughout the competition.
Meanwhile, the girls’ team put on a dominant display at the Alexander Road High Tournament, winning six of their eight matches. After early losses to Herschel (1-4) and Glenwood House (2-5), they bounced back with emphatic victories over Alex (8-1), Rhenish (8-1), Woodridge (8-2), Pearson (9-1), Oakhill (7-1), Westville (5-0), and DSG 2 (5-0).
