EL hosts first Asian street food festival

Skinny G Productions is bringing the spicy flavours, cultural performances, and family-friendly entertainment of Asia to the streets of East London with the Asian Street Food Festival.

The event, set to take place on the evening of Friday March 7 at Border Cater Hire in Vincent.

It aims to bring together food lovers, local food businesses, and performers for a night of immersive cultural experiences.

Organiser Nicole Suttie, who has a history of hosting events around town, says the idea stemmed from their passion for bringing big-city experiences to East London.

“I’ve been fortunate enough to travel through Asia, and the street food culture there is just amazing. I think we sometimes miss that in East London, so I wanted to create an event where people can experience new flavours, try different foods, and celebrate cultures they might not be familiar with,” Suttie said.

The festival will showcase a variety of Asian-inspired dishes, including Indian, Thai, Korean, Chinese, Japanese, and Filipino cuisine.

“Well-known local restaurants will be offering special street food menus, while smaller vendors will bring unique flavours to the table.

“Fresh Asian produce will also be on sale for those who want to take home ingredients and try cooking their own dishes.”

Beyond the variety of food, the event will feature Bollywood dancers, Kawaii-inspired performances, arts and crafts for children, henna artists, and live DJs blending Afro-Asian beats.

“I really wanted to create a space where families can come together in a safe, fun environment while experiencing different cultures.

“Whether it’s through food, music, or art, there will be something for everyone to enjoy,” Suttie said.

Vendors offering spicy and Asian-inspired food, as well as artists and performers, are encouraged to take part in the festival.

While there are no sponsorship opportunities, the event is designed to elevate local creatives and small businesses, giving them a platform to showcase their work and generate income.

Attendees can bring their own cooler boxes with drinks for a fee of R20, as no alcohol will be sold on-site. Vendors who are interested to can email nicole@skngproductions.com or WhatsApp 073-775-6089.

The festival’s Facebook page will also provide more updates.
