We chat to Tiane Lelicia Cilliers about her babysitting business TLC Babysitting and Childcare where she offers her services to all her East London clients.

What type of childcare services do you offer?

I babysit and take care of children when their parents are away. During that time, I entertain, tutor, cook for the children as well as attend to any specific needs they might have to make them as comfortable as possible while they are without their parents.

How and when did you decide to start your babysitting/childcare business?

After weighing my options for what to do after school, I realised what an incredible opportunity it would be to become an au pair in the Netherlands. I would be able to independently go out into the world as an adult, earn work experience and a decent salary all while doing a job I absolutely love and am passionate about in stunning Europe. However, I discovered that most host families prefer women aged 20 or older, but I was determined to gather as much experience as I could to prove that my age doesn’t define my capability. That’s when the idea of babysitting and childcare came to mind. This would be one of the ways that I would secure the experience and money needed to pay for au pairing. All the profits I make go directly towards funding my au pair journey.

Do you have any background or training in childcare or early childhood development?

Since I was young, I’ve always been the ‘responsible one’, so I’ve spent many hours taking care of cousins or nieces for my family. I also volunteer regularly at the incredible NGO Guardians of Hope, helping out wherever I can.

Do you run your business alone?

I run it alone with the advice of my parents.

How has the support from parents and the community been since you started?

I told my parents I wanted to run this business on my own, but would appreciate their support — and that they have given me. Knowing that they are proud of me helps me push through the difficulties I have discovered when running my own business.

What are the top three values or lessons you aim to teach the children in your care?

Compassion, independent creativity and curiosity of the unknown.

What’s your favourite part about working with children, and why?

Whenever I see their little faces light up, I’m overcome with joy. I love watching them grow — emotionally, academically or physically.

What are some of your goals or future plans for growing your childcare business?

I hope to be able to secure valuable job experience that will prepare me for a future of success.
