GO PEOPLE: Siyanda Njadayi

What kind of food do you sell?

We specialise in delicious kota and chicken wraps.

How and when did you decide to start your food business?

Due to being unemployed and having all the time to myself, I asked myself — why not start a food corner? That’s when I decided to take the step and start selling food. I officially started operating on April 11.

What inspired you to get into the food industry?

Cooking is one of my hobbies. I like being in the kitchen and trying out new things. I started taking pictures of what I prepare for my family and posted those pictures on my Facebook page and people fell in love with my food, some even suggested I start a business. I looked around and did research about what other vendors were selling, and I decided to offer something different.

Do you run the business on your own, or do you have a team?

I run the business on my own.

How has the support from your community been since you started?

I am so grateful for the way my community has responded to my business. They are very supportive.

What are the top three things you believe make your food stand out from the rest?

First, passion, I’m passionate about what I do, and I believe that shows in the quality of the food I make. Second, love, I always prepare the food I sell with love, because I want the customer to fall in love with it at first sight. And third, I dedicate my time to making sure every kota and wrap is prepared just right, aiming to meet and even exceed the customer’s expectations.

What’s your personal favourite item on your menu, and why?

The roti for the wraps, because it is one of the most challenging items because I prepare and bake it from scratch myself.

Have you faced any challenges in your journey so far, and how have you managed to overcome them?

The only challenge so far is making sure my food is accessible to everyone that would love to buy my food.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to start their own food business?

I would say make the idea practical, take charge and start. Even if it’s messy you will eventually get there.
