Ursula Carter, founder of Butterfly Creations, is a Cambridge-based creative whose custom-made pet wear and personalised character outfits have warmed the hearts of both furry and human customers.
From bespoke dog jerseys to character onesies for all ages, Ursula shares her passion, challenges, and dreams with us.
Ursula, tell us about Butterfly Creations — what do you do?
I design and create custom dog jerseys and jackets tailored to each pet’s measurements. I also make Snuffle Rugs and pet toys. For humans, I craft custom character onesies, gowns, hooded blankets — you name it! Any character, any colour, any size — from newborns to full-grown adults.
Where did your passion for this sort of work begin?
I’ve always loved being creative. Designing unique items that people (and pets!) will cherish is incredibly fulfilling for me. It brings me so much joy to see happy customers — especially when their pets are part of the excitement.
Who helps you keep everything running?
While I mainly work alone, I’m extremely blessed with a supportive family. My daughters, Steph and Christeen, my son Lorry, and my parents Les and Lyn Tesmer, all help me — especially with cutting out patterns. My sister, Paddy, helps with deliveries when time is tight. I honestly couldn’t manage without them.
What are your best-selling products right now?
The pet jerseys and jackets are very popular, especially during colder seasons. Hooded blankets are also flying off the shelves, and my Snuffle Rugs and toys are quickly becoming customer favourites too.
What inspires your various designs?
I design everything myself; that’s actually my favourite part. I get inspiration from my customers’ ideas and requests. Sometimes they come to me with a dream, and I get to bring it to life. That’s the magic of it.
What challenges do you face as a small business owner?
The biggest challenge? Wishing there were more hours in a day! I hate saying no to anyone, so I try to take on every request I can. But the support I receive — from my family, customers, and friends who share my posts, it makes a big difference.
What are your hopes for the future of Butterfly Creations?
I just want to continue doing what I love — making people and their pets happy. If I can also help financially support my family through this, that’s a huge bonus. I hope to keep creating unique products that you won’t find in any store.
What advice do you have for others starting their own business?
Starting a business takes faith and perseverance. You have to believe in yourself, advertise consistently, and never give up. Repeat customers are gold, and a strong support system — such as my family — is a real gift.
