Surfer’s shark survival story available locally

Shannon Ainslie’s miraculous tale of surviving a great white shark attack at Nahoon Reef is an epic story penned in his memoir, Child of the Wild Coast, which is finally available locally for purchase at surf shop, Salt & Surf in Chintsa.

In July 2001, a then 15 year old Ainslie, a pupil from Hudson Park High School was out surfing at Nahoon when a 4m great white shark launched a surprise attack — pulling him underwater and severely injuring his hand. The shark, which may have been along the coast as a result of the annual sardine run, bit into Ainslie’s surfing board before swimming away accompanied by another great white just metres away.

At the time, Ainslie recalled looking straight into its eyes and praying for God to let him live.

Twenty years later, he can vividly recollect the state of shock and fear he experienced.

His reflections and the lessons he has learnt since are recorded in his memoir.

The book was released in 2022, but was never stocked for purchase on the Wild Coast until now.

It captures Ainslie not only as a survivor but as someone whose faith and resilience became as powerful as the ocean that almost took his life.

The writing process itself was deeply emotional and took several years. Ainslie says reliving his time in hospital dealing with depression and anger, was both difficult and cathartic.

The book includes testimony from eyewitnesses of Ainslie’s attack, family recollections and anecdotes from others who’ve survived shark encounters. The result is raw, personal and intimate beyond what Ainslie has ever shared in public talks or interviews before.

Although the shark attack happened at Nahoon Reef, Ainslie says the story is just as relevant to the broader Eastern Cape.

“Seeing the book available here [in Chintsa] makes it feel even more rooted in home. It’s where the Wild Coast and my story meet.

“We all face ‘sharks’ in life; fear, trauma, financial stress, broken relationships.

“This book is about facing those things, and finding the strength to keep going.”

Surette Malherbe of Salt & Surf said they were honored to bring the book to a local audience because Ainslie’s story demonstrates the power of resilience while chronicling important history of the Wild Coast.

Malherbe said: “There’s already a buzz. People are picking it up, flipping through it. It’s perfect for the holidays or for anyone looking for something meaningful to read.”

Asked what he hopes young surfers take from the book, Ainslie says:

“Setbacks don’t define you. The ocean teaches us to be resilient, to stay calm under pressure, to get back up.

“And with faith in Jesus, you can overcome things you never imagined possible. Your story matters, and you’re stronger than you think.”

Child of the Wild Coast: The story of Shannon Ainslie, dual great white shark attack survivor is available at Salt & Surf, Crossways Village Centre, Kwelera (near Chintsa). R220 per copy and stock is limited.
