On July 22, Clarendon High School for Girls officially unveiled a large-scale mural in its newly built Mary Laurie Hall.
The installation marks a significant addition to the school’s cultural and educational environment, providing a meaningful visual backdrop to events and activities.
The mural was completed during the July school holidays by East London-based artist Nathan Sanan, whose professional experience includes work both locally and internationally.
Spanning the full height and width of one of the hall’s interior walls, the mural was completed in 192 hours, with Sanan using more than 112 spray paint cans, 90l of paint, and about 500m of masking tape. “My vision was to create something that everyone could relate to — something that speaks to each person in a different way,” Sanan said during the unveiling ceremony.
“I hope that those who engage with the mural find both personal meaning and a sense of shared connection.”
During his time on site, Sanan engaged with Clarendon’s grade 10-12 visual arts pupils, providing them with an opportunity to observe the process of large-scale mural production and develop their practical skills through direct, hands-on learning.
This experience reflects Clarendon’s commitment to offering meaningful, real-world learning opportunities that strengthen its visual arts programme.
“The mural is more than a work of art — it’s a powerful representation of the values we hold as a school,” Clarendon principal Julie Patrick said.
“It reflects our belief in creativity, excellence, and community.
“We are proud to provide our pupils with inspiring spaces and experiences that support both personal growth and educational achievement.”
The mural now stands as a permanent feature of the Mary Laurie Hall and reflects Clarendon’s ongoing commitment to fostering creativity, collaboration, and school spirit.
As the hall becomes the setting for assemblies, performances, sporting events, and prizegivings, the mural will continue to serve as a unifying symbol of the school’s values and vision.
