The Guild Theatre, a much-loved cultural landmark in the metro since its opening 62 years ago in October 1962, has completed the first phase of its long-envisioned interior renovation, with a striking upgrade and beautification of the foyer.
Now adorned with deep-red carpets, the theatre’s entrance has been transformed into a warm, inviting space that reflects a rich institutional history and an enduring commitment to the arts.
Guild Theatre board chair and acclaimed actor Zane Meas said: “We want our communities to have a sense of ownership as they see their resources being reinvested in the sustainability of our city’s jewel of culture.”
He said the Guild Theatre continued to serve as a vital venue for both local and touring productions, and remained a key player in the annual Umtiza Arts Festival.
In 2024, the theatre installed outdoor benches as part of its ongoing beautification drive. The foyer upgrade is the latest step in reaffirming the venue’s role as a cultural home for the city.
Eastern Cape Provincial Arts and Culture Council CEO Monde Nkasawe said the importance of the renovations went beyond aesthetics: “Renovations are always important.
“They make the establishment more accessible and professional, and that excites people to make use of the space.
“There’s now a counterculture where people don’t go to cinemas or theatres as much, it’s become normal. If we can break that and reconnect people with these experiences, we’ll see families enjoying cultural arts together again and appreciating what artists do with their skills.”
Nkasawe said revitalised venues such as the Guild Theatre helped cultivate a culture of consuming cultural products, drawing people away from passive screen time and back into communal spaces of live artistic expression.
For those actively using the space, the impact is already felt. Jo Jackson Dance Company founder Jo Jackson shared how the Guild had shaped her dancers’ careers: “It has been instrumental in allowing me to go all-in and showcase the talent of our dancers. It really is where great memories are made and where local talent is showcased.
“It’s so exciting to see the renovations taking place. If we could just get more companies to get on board, it would happen quicker.
“Because of the Guild Theatre, so many artists are now travelling abroad, showcasing their talent. It gives them the space to grow, gain confidence, and perform.”
As the Guild Theatre enters a new chapter, it remains a beacon of creativity, learning, and inspiration, one that continues to uplift local talent while inviting the public to rediscover the joy of live performance.
The message from the Guild community is clear: the stage is set, the lights are on, and the Guild Theatre is ready to welcome you, red carpet and all.
