For more than three decades, East London’s Kimberly Whittle has been creating comfort for pets and peace of mind for their owners.
What began as a children’s clothing business evolved into Barking Dog Beds, a thriving venture offering handcrafted dog beds, jerseys, collars, leads, and natural treats.
With her daughter, Allison Young, expanding the business into KwaZulu-Natal, Barking Dog Beds continues to grow, one wagging tail at a time.
What inspired you to start Barking Dog Beds?
About 30 years ago, I was selling children’s clothing when I noticed a gap in the market for quality pet products. People truly love their pets, they don’t think twice about spending money on their fur babies. I started with beds and later expanded into dog jerseys, leads, collars, and a wide range of natural dog treats.
Tell us more about the new Snuggle Bed range, what makes it special?
The Snuggle Bed is made from incredibly soft Mongolian fleece and filled with fiber curl cushions for extra warmth and comfort. The outer cover zips off for easy washing, making it practical and cozy. We also make a Cuddle Bed version, which includes a hood, so you don’t have to worry about blankets falling off. They come in a gorgeous range of colours.
You also stock a waterproof range. Tell us about the features and why they’re ideal for larger breeds?
Our waterproof beds are rectangular donut-style beds made with durable ripstop fabric and feature a side handle for easy carrying. They’re filled with high-density foam that we recycle and chip ourselves; we even created a part-time job for Anele Tengani, our foam chipper, which we’re proud of. These beds are easy to wipe clean, and pet hair doesn’t stick to them. We also offer an optional zipped cover, depending on preference.
What materials do you use, and how do you ensure comfort and durability?
We use strong, lasting fabrics like workwear material, denim, or heavy-duty upholstery fabric. These fabrics withstand regular washing and are perfect for pets. Comfort is key, so our beds are both soft and tough. We also custom-make beds to suit individual customer needs.
Do you make each bed yourself, or do you have a team helping you make the items?
We’re a team! Between East London and Kokstad, we have three lovely, competent ladies who’ve worked with us for over 10 years. Allison Young, my daughter, joined the business five years ago and now runs our Natal branch.
What have been some of your customers’ favourite features or feedback so far?
We love receiving photos of happy dogs enjoying their beds and treats, that’s the best kind of feedback. We often share these lovely moments on our Facebook page.
Are your beds customisable or made to order?
Yes, while we have a standard range, we’re always happy to customise beds based on needs.
How can people order from you, and do you offer delivery?
Customers can order via Facebook, WhatsApp, or by calling us directly. Most of our business comes from markets, shows, and events. We also offer courier delivery, with fees depending on location.
As a small business owner, what has been the most rewarding part of your journey so far?
The friendships I’ve formed through this journey and the comfort I’m able to offer dogs are the most rewarding aspects. There’s nothing better than knowing a dog has a safe, warm place to sleep.
Any tips for pet owners looking to create a cozy sleeping space for their dogs?
Invest in a good bed! It helps promote better sleep and comfort, and may just keep them out of yours. Always wash and maintain their bed for hygiene and health.
