Defy gravity at aerial, dance studio

What began as a heartfelt gift from a mother to her daughter has grown into one of East London’s most inspiring spaces for creativity, strength, and personal transformation.

Fella’s Dance and Fitness Academy, founded by Twané Caitlin Venter, is a vibrant aerial studio based at Nutting Hall in East London and focuses on teaching a variety of acrobatic and dance disciplines while suspended in the air using silks, trapeze, or lyra (hoop).

Specialising in aerial silks, hoop, and pole, the studio offers group and children’s classes that are inclusive, beginner-friendly, and deeply rooted in empowerment and is a space where people of all ages, shapes, and abilities come together to stretch, strengthen, and soar, both physically and mentally.

We spoke to Twané to learn more about her journey, what makes aerial training so special, and why her studio is becoming a go-to for those seeking a new way to move, grow, and express themselves.

What inspired the creation of Ariel Arts Fella’s?

My mother was my biggest inspiration. Eight years ago, I had no idea what aerial silks were, until she gifted me two silks. I’m self-taught and trained every day. It quickly became my passion. When I matriculated, I opened my own studio under my mom’s existing dance studio. She taught belly dancing long before I was born and was actually my first dance teacher ever. So, it’s safe to say this journey started with her.

Who can join your classes?

Everyone and anyone! My classes are filled with all age groups and genders. The diversity is amazing. It’s a safe, non-judgmental space where everyone can be themselves.

What makes aerial arts different from a workout or dance class?

Aerial arts give you the feeling of being completely free. You’re not just working out, you’re expressing emotions in a safe and creative way, while also building strength, confidence, and self-discipline.

What are “smart group classes”?

I run group classes that are structured and intentional. I also teach children’s classes. Each session is guided, with focus on individual progress while enjoying the group energy.

Can beginners join? What if someone has no upper body strength?

Yes, beginners are absolutely welcome! No experience or upper body strength is required. In my classes, we focus on aerial stretching and strengthening training that gradually builds the skills needed to perform on the silks, hoop, or pole.

How does aerial training support mental wellness?

I asked my students this question, and their feedback was moving. Many said aerial helped them feel calmer, more focused, more confident, and emotionally stronger. It’s more than exercise, it’s therapy in motion.

Are the exercises safe for all ages and levels?

Yes! I’ve taught children, adults, and even children as young as three. Every student progresses at their own pace, and safety is always prioritised.

How soon do students see progress?

Many students start seeing changes within eight weeks, that’s just eight hours of training! Some who started between February and July have already shown incredible progress. On average, real results show within three to four months.

Are aerial arts just for women students?

Not at all! I’ve taught quite a few men and they did spectacularly well on the silks. Aerial arts are for everyone.
