Sugar, this bake-off is going to get sticky!

East London’s favourite coffee shop, The Cutman & Hawk Caffé, and Go & Express are searching for the next batch of brilliant bakers to take part in their four-week bake-off competition.

The winner will earn the right to supply the newest coffee shop in Retail Park, Beacon Bay, with their glorious cakes.

The competition will see contestants vying for the top position — the last standing four bakers will win the right to supply their champion creations to Cutman & Hawk Caffé on a weekly basis.

Shop founder Alan Hawkins said the contest would be held on four consecutive Mondays, with judges selecting a winner for the week.

The finale is being billed as the “Cake of the day” bake-off.

“Anyone who can bake must submit a photograph, description and the price of their cake. We will select a team of four people to make up the judging panel,” he said.

As a passionate businessman, he said he was consistently on the lookout for ways to assist other local businesses.

“This is for our customers and we are excited to bring this competition to them, especially readers of Go!”

Hawkins roasts, packages and sells his own coffee from beans imported from West Africa and countries such as Guatemala. He supplies to businesses across the country.

He wanted the competition to bring the tight-knit community of East London together.

“We want to be a business that is involved in the community that we serve, because we value our customers.

“We want to rope them in as our suppliers. But most importantly, this is an opportunity for our community members who are passionate about baking.”

To enter the competition, submit a photograph and a full description of your favourite home-baked cake including its estimated weight and size, flavour profile and the price at which you are prepared to supply your cake to Cutman & Hawk Caffé on a commercial basis.

Email entries to sales@elcoffee.co.za, on or before 12 midday on October 7.

Up to 16 entries will be selected for the competition.

“If your entry is successful, you will be required to submit your cake to the panel for tasting on a date to be agreed on.

“The panel will conduct up to four tastings during which each cake will be judged against the three competitors on the day,” Hawkins said.

Each of the four winners will win a gift hamper valued at about R300 from Cutman & Hawk Caffé and  will be invited to become a Cake of the Day supplier to the coffee shop.
