The fourth annual Restoration in Jazz tribute and fundraising concert will be taking place on Saturday November 4 at the Guild Theatre.

This year’s showcase will be dedicated to the late Pinise Saul, a legendary jazz vocalist from Duncan Village who went into exile in the 1970s.

The concert will include internationally renowned guest artist, McCoy Mrubata, as well as Resti Pule, Vukile Mpatalala, Ally Sokatsi, Sakhile Simani and Siphokazi Ngxokolo.

This is the first time a female artist will be honoured in the four-year history of the concert.

Saul was considered the “Queen of African jazz” before she was exiled, after which she made music about the atrocities of the apartheid system and performed for many anti-apartheid platforms.

Ngxokolo has been involved in the project since its inception.

“It has been so special to see the programme gain traction and to see the wonderful children that are the recipients of the Jazz in Schools programme grow into aspiring students of the jazz vocation.”

“I grew up hearing about the musical songstress (Saul) from my hometown in Mdantsane. Years later, I was to bear witness to her dynamic performance knowledge,” Ngokolo said.

Mrubata hails from Kwa Langa, where his journey as a jazz saxophonist and flute player began in the 1980s.

“The significance of this type of showcase is to keep the genre of jazz alive and bring awareness of great musicians like the late Mama Pinise Saul, as many young people might not know of her and her work,” Mrubata said.
