Free eye screenings at Torga Optical, Beacon Bay

One of SA’s leading optical chains, Torga Optical, is calling on East London residents with eyesight troubles to take advantage of its free visual screenings currently on offer at its Beacon Bay and other branches.

Franchisee and optometrist Dr Sibusiso Mashalaba, 35, who has been with Torga for more than a decade said their three branches — in Mdantsane, Hemingways, and Beacon Bay — were offering free screenings as part of their commitment to community eye health.

“We are unique,” Mashalaba said. “We manufacture our own frames and have state-of-the-art lens technology in our Cape Town lab.

“Because we don’t outsource lenses or frames, our clients save — there’s no middleman. Plus, we offer great promotions throughout the year.”

Mashalaba said their practices focus on giving clients value for money, often offering multiple pairs of glasses or prescription sunglasses with their consultations.

“We want to be a practice that is community-oriented and build long-lasting relationships with our clients — from pensioners to children. We cater for everyone, whether you need fashion frames, safety eyewear for construction work, or lenses for computer use or night driving.”

Torga Optical is currently running a promotion offering clients a second pair of sunglasses, an ideal option for drivers needing polarised prescription eyewear.

“Right now, we’re offering free screenings to spread awareness because many people don’t realise they might have vision issues. If the screening shows any problems, we then recommend a full eye test to determine the best lenses for them.”

The free screenings include a basic eye check using an auto refractor — a computer-controlled machine that measures refractive error and helps determine prescriptions for eyeglasses or contact lenses.

“We also check the back of the eye for conditions such as cataracts or glaucoma. People can come in for screening seven days a week.”

Residents are encouraged to visit Torga Optical Beacon Bay to take advantage of the free screenings and ensure their eyesight stays sharp and healthy.
