Search for missing elderly man enters third week

The search for missing East London pensioner Trevor Swartbooi enters its third week, with volunteers, family members and community organisations joining in an extensive effort to bring him home safely.

Swartbooi, 68, was last seen on February 28 at about 2pm in the vicinity of Braelyn Hills Bridge in East London. At the time of his disappearance, he was wearing a brown top and grey shorts.

Dawn Gounden, of Renegades Search and Rescue, said teams had been working alongside concerned community members, searching surrounding areas, while also checking hospitals, shelters and state mortuaries.

Swartbooi suffers from dementia, which may affect his ability to communicate clearly or safely find his way home.

His condition, combined with the fact that he can be fearful of strangers and struggles with communication, has raised serious concerns for his safety.

“The family has been on an emotional rollercoaster since he went missing, but they are still holding onto their faith that their dad will be found safe,” said Gounden, while speaking to the Go! on behalf of the family.

A missing persons case has been officially registered with the East London police.

Swartbooi, a father of five children, is described as a kind and generous person who loves the outdoors and enjoys helping others.

“He has a bubbly personality that people are drawn to, and family is the most important thing to him.

“They share a very close relationship,” Gounden said.

Renegades Search and Rescue is urging residents in East London and surrounding areas to keep a lookout and report any possible sightings of the elderly man.

Anyone who may have seen Swartbooi or who has information about his whereabouts is urged to contact Gounden on 074-712-5855.

All information received will be treated with strict confidentiality.
