Eight decades. That’s how long Morgan Bay Hotel has been creating holiday memories along one of the Wild Coast’s most stunning stretches of coastline.
From summer school holidays and seaside romances to family getaways spanning generations, to barefoot summer days on the beach and whale sightings in the winter months, this Eastern Cape icon has quietly shaped how South Africans holiday by the sea for generations.
Still owned by the founding Warren-Smith family, Morgan Bay Hotel has grown with the times while keeping its charm firmly intact.
Guests return year after year for the personal touch, the warm welcome, and the timeless appeal of a classic seaside escape.
“Morgan Bay Hotel has always been about connection and comfort,” Richard Warren-Smith, grandson of the original founder, Ivan Warren-Smith, and the third generation to run the hotel told the Go!
“Over the years, our guests have become part of the family, and we’ve gotten to know them too.”
Richard and his wife Jackie took over the hotel in 2006 and invested in renovations and expansions.
“Our guests have always loved the predictability of coming here – that sense of tradition and familiarity,” said Jackie. “But celebrating 80 years doesn’t mean standing still.
“Our goal has never been to freeze the hotel in time, but to keep it feeling fresh, contemporary and relevant, while protecting the essence of what makes people return year after year.”
Jackie said the 2010 openings of the wedding venue, Milkwood Spa, The Sandhoppa beach boutique, and the brand-new Deck Restaurant and Bar added new dimensions to the Morgan Bay experience, catering to every type of guest.
The Deck quickly became a popular all-day dining destination, drawing in-house guests, local food lovers, and day-trippers from as far afield as KuGompo City. Later expansions added more rooms, a new outdoor pool deck, and a larger dining room, accommodating the hotel’s 42 rooms and suites.
The history of Morgan Bay Hotel began just after World War 2, when Royal Air Force engineer Ivan Warren-Smith arrived in the small hamlet of Morgan Bay. Spotting a modest boarding house for sale, he bought the property and began what would span generations.
His son Jeff joined the business in the 1962, helping the hotel grow while welcoming generations of holidaymakers.
Jeff married Sue two years later. Together, they nurtured the hotel through decades of growth, welcoming families, schoolchildren, and holidaymakers from across the country.
Richard said their visitors, with more than 80 summers of beach fun and 80 mild winters watching southern right whales, the hotel had remained a constant: a seaside retreat that blended charm, comfort, and family spirit.
Located just an hour’s drive from KuGompo City, this destination remains a timeless escape, blending coastal charm and authentic hospitality with modern comforts.
With golden sands, dramatic cliffs, and a family-run ethos, it’s easy to see why guests keep coming back, some now bringing the third generation of their families.
“It’s about connection,” Richard said. “That’s the true DNA of Morgan Bay Hotel.
“It’s a family hotel in more ways than one.”
Eighty years later, Morgan Bay Hotel is still celebrating the joy of the sea, the warmth of family, and the magic of the Wild Coast.
