Schools Schools on the GO! in September By Sarah Kingon - September 30, 2016 Facebook Twitter Google+ Pinterest WhatsApp 1 of 29 MAKING A DIFFERENCE: Abbotsford's Grade 6 class had a fun time at their SPCA outing MATHS MERRIMENT: College Street maths department had their first ever maths workshop camp for the Grade 6 and 7s recently. Pupils left their warm beds to come and learn about maths in many fun ways. The programme included drilling the four basic operations, maths vocabulary, problem solving, maths games, measurement and introduction to geometry. During a report back assembly to the whole school, one of the pupils, Lihle Buti, thanked maths teachers, Vuyi Tima, Rena Sephosi and Pumza Mlotywa for organising the camp and inspiring College Street to love and appreciate maths and its teachers. The camp also taught pupils to be compassionate as they shared their last day's meal with children from Isaiah 58. VICTORIOUS VOICES: The Stirling Chamber Choir won the regional finals of the AKTV singing competition and then came second in SA at the national AKTV finals in Stellenbosch. Then they went on to win the Cantamus National Choir Festival in George on the way home. GOOD AS GOLD: George Randell Grade 7 pupil Ovayo Magwebu received a gold award for her poignant essay, 'The Scar that Never Heals'. The annual 100 word competition is organised by the South African Council for English Education - and is probably one of the most difficult of all writing genres OUT OF THIS WORLD: Karen Ferreira from KykNet's 'Kleuterzone' visited Grensies Petite and a fun programme was enjoyed by all ON A MUSICAL MISSION: Zintle Mlomo (saxophone, right), Mbali Mahlangeni (recorder) and Klara Eybers (violin) were among 26 high school pupils accepted for the senior section of the National Grahamstown Music Competition recently. Klara gave excellent performances in the first two rounds, while Mbali and Zintle were two of only six high school musicians selected for the semifinal round. This is an outstanding achievement WORDY ACHIEVEMENT: In support of improved literacy results, GET curriculum directorate hosted a provincial spelling bee competition in the intermediate phase. Old girls returned to enjoy a traditional service and speech from headgirl of 1976, Dr Helen Muir. She challenged girls to write down their dreams, use intuition more often and focus on the connection between heart and mind. They achieved second place in the section: 'In the Mix!' ANGEL PACKERS: The Beaconhurst EarlyAct pupils spent an afternoon packing clothing and product parcels for a new project of Angel Outreach, called The Tea Room. These items will be donated to pregnant mothers at informal settlements. COMPUTER WHIZZES: Beaconhurst High School proudly saw 38 pupils receive certificated for their achievements in the 2016 Computer Applications Olympiad. Gold award winners, from left, Jana Pudifin and Caitlin Smit were among the top 7% countrywide, while 13 pupils received silver awards. Beaconhurst pupils have proved that they can compete with the best in the country. Well done to all involved. JOYOUS OCCASION: The Clarendon Prep Grade 1s treated their grandparents to a glorious morning at the school's annual grandparent's day celebration CARING YOUNG FUNDRAISERS: Five St Anne's Primary School pupils visited DJ Sobey Old Ages Home recently to hand over a donation of adult nappies to those in need. Money to purchase the nappies was raised through the initiative of five girls, who sold tickets to a movie at the school, which many pupils attended. Matron Abigail Oliphant, far left, was very grateful for the generous donation, which will go a long way to helping those at the home. Picture: SARAH KINGON DEBATING MINDS: Hudson Park High School is extremely proud of their pupils who took part in the Eastern Cape Debating Provincial Tournament, which was held in Queenstown recently. From left are pupils Siyasanga Kwinana, Lerato Motaung (who came first), Thando Dyasi (who came second) and Lelethu Mbokomo (who came seventh). Motaung, Dyasi and Kwinana made the Eastern Cape senior team. Hudson Park wishes the pupils all the very best for their national tournament, which will be held in December. FLYING HIGH: Port Rex Technical High School head prefect Nathan Weiss, left, and deputy head Xabiso Nyangintaka fly the flags recently at the school's annual Founder's Day celebration. The Founder's Day ceremony, held on the rugby field, was attended by many ex-pupils, and some of the guests of honour included 2006 head boy and keynote speaker, Stuart Chamberlain, as well as Beuron Bosman. The ceremony was followed by various netball, hockey and rugby matches against Stirling High School. WELL READ: Stirling Primary School pupils performed well at the SACEE Read Out Loud competition. Tallis Hurly, left, came first and Inga Wait came third in their respective age categories. ART ON SHOW: Pupils from Sharon's Art School, from left, Cole Kriedemann, Emily Kruger and Josh Thompson, had their pictures accepted for the prestigious Santam online exhibition, which showcases the best art in SA and its neighbouring countries. ACTING OUT: The Selborne College drama boys took part in the Alexander Playhouse Drama Festival with their production of 'Aria da Capo', written by Edna St Vincent Millay and directed by Jo Stemmet, alongside 12 other schools. CLOTHES FOR AFRICA: Gonubie Primary's Early Act recently ran a clothes collection for charity. On September 1, the school celebrated Spring Day by donating items of clothing in exchange for wearing civvies. The school exceeded all expectations by collecting a mountain of clothes which were donated to LIA (Love in Action) in Gonubie. EXPERIMENTAL EVENT: Abbotsford Christian School recently held their first science expo. The place was buzzing with parents who came to watch their children demonstrate their knowledge and skills in science, as did pupils, Asemahle Mnqotana, left, and Anoyolo Mtiya. A big thank you goes to Blendah Chanaiwa for organising this event. HAPPY PLANTER: Sphetho Vusani from the Carel du Toit Centre plants a seedling in the garden at the centre in celebration of spring recently. Parents came along to the school and paid R5 for their children to plant a seedling. The centre, which teaches deaf children to speak, took the opportunity to put talking and gardening vocabulary into practice. SNAKES ALIVE: George Randell Primary School took their U9A, U11A and U13A rugby teams on tour recently to play Muir College, Handhaaf and Blue Water Bay Primary School in Nelson Mandela Bay and Uitenhage. The emphasis was not only on rugby, but also included educational visits to Bayworld in Port Elizabeth, where they enjoyed a seal show and a spectacular snake interaction. Here Grade 5 pupil Okuhle Mnconywa faces his fears ALL DRESSED UP: Grensies Petite pupils paid R10 to dress up in civvies in an effort to raise funds for tape aids for the blind recently. Pictured are pupils in various forms of fancy dress with teacher Wemien Brand GREEN FINGERS: David Mama High School grade 9 and 11 pupils celebrated Arbour Day recently by planting a donation of trees from Transnet Port Terminal at the school. A total of 10 indigenous common wild fig trees and two orange trees were planted by the pupils. They learnt about environmental awareness and the need to plant trees for the benefit of their communities. Herbs and beans were also planted under the trees to create a mini forest ecosystem. Transnet and the Wildlife and Environmental Society of South Africa (Wessa) were impressed with the pupils' environmental knowledge. The school looks forward to welcoming back the Transnet team for a career guidance exhibition in the future. CALENDAR WINNER: Stirling Primary School is extremely proud of Grade 3 pupil Jenna Muller. My awesome Mommy' has been chosen for the 2017 Santam Child Art Calendar BEAUTIFULLY READ: Congratulations to Akhira Dullabh of Clarendon Preparatory School, who achieved first place for her reading of the ant and spider story at the Department of Education's District reading competition recently SPRING GIFT: Thanks to the generous donation of flowers from Beaconhurst pupils and their parents, a group of prefects had the privilege of delivering a colourful celebration of spring to the elderly at Kennersley Park. TAKING OVER THE REIGNS: On August 29, Hudson Park High held its prefect induction ceremony. A new electronic voting system was used with incredible accuracy. The school elected 28 new prefects with Thando Dyasi, left, and Amy Sharrock leading the body as head prefects. Well done to all the new leaders.
