The Motsepe Foundation handed over more than 2000 toys to children around the metro, including those from Garcia Flats, a block of flats where low-income earners live.

Ward 4 councillor Tessa Botha said this is the first time the block of flats is a beneficiary since the foundation started the initiative.

Although it was short notice for them to collect all the 150 names of children in the area, they were very pleased with what the Motsepe foundation has done for the children.

“I received a call on Wednesday afternoon from the mayor’s office saying I should compile a list of children in my ward and that I should submit it on Thursday before 10am.

“I told them that it was such short notice and I would only be able to submit in the afternoon. Fortunately they understood,” Botha said.

The DA councillor said the kids were so excited and joyful and were playing around the whole time which warmed her heart to see them that way.

A grandparent of one of the gift recipients, Anette Vorster, said they truly appreciate what the foundation is doing for their families.

“Sometimes it happens that the parents don’t even have money to buy gifts for the children.

“There are many underprivileged children in our area and it was so nice to see them happy.

“Maybe the foundation can do more such things in the future,” Vorster said.
