KING William’s Town XI Cricket Club has moved to the top of the league after their convincing win over Good Hope in a League 50-overs encounter in Breidbach at the weekend.

The home side was sent in to bat after losing the toss and declared on 361/9 in the 49th over after a massive batting contribution of 163 runs by South African national and Border cricketer Angelique Taai.

She also took four wickets for 30 runs in her eight overs bowled, which earned her the top player of the day award.

In response to the King side’s total of 361, the visitors only reached 172 all out.

Playing in their maiden season, the win has moved King to the top of the seven teams’ league.

King captain and opener Shafieka Pillay contributed 29 runs with Ghandhi Jafta 99 and Homba Mazeleni contributing a further 12. All other team mates left with single figures.

During an interview with Taai, she said the team consists mostly of young girls from Breidbach and a few from King William’s Town and East London.

“We have decided to develop our youngsters after we saw the need for a cricket team coming from this area where there are so many talented girls.”

“Our youngest player is only seven and we are working with the local schools as our way of ploughing back into the community,” Taai enthused.
