SABC 3’s Expresso presenter and MC Katlego Maboe serenaded the audience with a cover of Ed Sheeran’s hit Shape of You at the East London leg of the Shoprite’s Topstars last week.

The national singing competition was held at the Hemingways Hotel recently to choose a winner from the Buffalo City area.

The massively popular performance contest, presented by the Shoprite Group of companies for its employees and now in its 11th year, proved to be even bigger and better than previous years. Shoprite employees from all over Africa are able to enter, including staff from the Checkers, Shoprite, Usave, House & Home, OK Furniture, LiquorShop, Computicket, MediRite and Hungry Lion chains.

Local producer and music legend Mynie Grové said: “Topstars singing competition is a wonderful example of how empowering and uplifting the expression of musical talent can be for everyone.”

She further went on to encourage the employees of all the Shoprite group stores to explore their talents – and who knows where their talents might take them one day.

Shoprite Group’s human resources director Calli Burger said: “The staff are the company’s most important asset and Topstars is firmly entrenched as an annual highlight for everyone in the group. The teamwork the show generates brings a wonderful atmosphere to the workplace for those who participate.”

This year’s East London semifinals winner Christina Bishoti from Shoprite Mdantsane will now compete in the finals in Windhoek in September where the ultimate Topstar will be named.
