THE 17th edition of the Steve Biko Memorial games will be a remarkable event and promises to attract sport enthusiasts from all areas in the Buffalo City Metro.
That’s the word from sport development officer Andile Mabombo, who was speaking at the Steve Biko Foundation centre on Monday afternoon.
“This is the event everyone is looking forward to in much anticipation and it has showed a rapid growth each year from its inception,” Mabombo said. The games, staged in commemoration of Biko’s life and legacy will feature rugby, soccer, netball and boxing with a whopping R52000 in prize money, trophies and medals up for grabs, kick off next month. “Registration started last week and will close on August 4 at 5pm which will be followed by the launch and balloting the next evening at the centre at 6pm,” Mabombo said.
“We expect only 32 teams for soccer and rugby and would like to emphasise that no late registration will be tolerated. Two delegates or representatives per participating team may attend the launch and the dress code is strictly formal wear.”
“We have invited local SA Rugby veterans from the 1960 era as guests to the launch as well as former boxing legends Welcome Ncita and Vuyani Bhungu, Buffalo City Sport Council president Xolani Bishoti and Buffalo City Safa president Mxolisi Prince Sibam.”
The affiliation fee for both soccer and rugby is R500 per club and R400 for netball.
