Siyasizana – a Zulu term which means: “we are helping each other” – was launched in Tembisa, Soweto, in 2015. The project has been running successfully in Mdantsane since January and aims to assist daycares, while also encouraging the recycling of bread bags.

“We looked at the needs of the daycares in East London, and wanted to find a way of giving back to the communities who support us. By collecting these bags to recycle, we can assist the daycare owners with the basic needs to make their daycare environments more comfortable, ultimately benefiting the children in their care,” Essential Foods Bakeries brand manager at Sasko, Lungelwa Mnyamana said.

In just six months, the 180 participating daycares in the Mdantsane area, with the help of community members, managed to collect 145000 Sasko bread bags. At the prize-giving last week, Sasko handed over 1170 prizes which included mattresses, backpacks, basins, carpets, chairs and even fridges or stoves for participating daycares.

“With a total of 145000 bags, the 180 participating daycares will now be able to prepare cooked meals, provide blankets to keep children warm, and set up tables and chairs during activity and meal times,” Mnyamana said.

Elsie Siace from Luzuko Daycare took first prize for collecting 4850 bread bags. She was closely followed by Vulyelwa Tyolo from Morning Star Daycare who collected 4700 bags.

Also included in the top five winners were Kids Connection Daycare, Kingdom Kids Daycare and Full of Life Daycare. With 2256 participating daycares across the country, the project has, to date, collected 3003566 bread bags and given out 10146 prizes to daycares.
