Former Eastern Cape DA Youth leader Anathi Majeke of Duncan Village has been sworn in as Buffalo City Metro’s new proportional councillor.
Majeke, 27, has filled the vacancy created when Jan Smit died of a heart attack in July.
Majeke is not new to leadership – at just 23 she was a branch chairwoman of then Ward 19, now Ward 8.
The same year she was elected as the BCM youth constituency leader and ultimately to the highest position of the DA Youth.
Before being sworn in on Wednesday, Majeke also served as the DA Bhisho legislature caucus leader Bobby Stevenson’s personal assistant.
She told Saturday Dispatch yesterday she was up to her new challenge.
“I hope to bring a younger perspective that will bring more focus to youth development and youth focused programmes.
“Although I hope to influence the entire council with a fresh perspective I also hope to contribute to the DA caucus with a specialised knowledge in provincial politics,” said Majeke.
The young councillor is completing her bachelors of arts degree in politics at the University of South Africa.
The DA, which has set its eyes on BCM in the 2021 local government elections, already has 24 councillors in the 100-member council.
DA caucus leader Terrence Fritz said Majeke was a welcome addition to their caucus.
“We have no doubt that she brings an amazing experience that will add to the efficiency of the caucus,” said Fritz.
