Halloween run/walk to raise funds for two cancer sufferers

TO CELEBRATE October being Cancer Month, Pink Fairy Multisport Adventures presents the Candles for Cancer fundraiser.
The proceeds will go towards a King William’s Town woman who has a dysfunctional colon and is on chronic medication. She has also lost both her parents due to cancer.
However, the funds will possibly be shared between her and another lady who has cancer for the third time.
“My reason for targeting individuals is two-fold,” explained the Pink Fairy Michael Webb.
“Firstly, I don’t like to give money to large organisations as I am never really sure if the money will be used as intended. I prefer to keep it private if possible.”
The Pink Fairy, who does a lot of other charity work in the King community, said the second and main reason for his involvement was to try and assist people who were exhibiting a true fighting spirit and positive attitude regardless of the situation they were facing.
“If we can make their burden a little easier by somehow helping their financial situation and alleviating some stress, then I believe we have succeeded. I believe that cancer can be beaten and that half the battle is mental,” he said.
The recipient, who wanted to remain anonymous, said that her journey had been long and since her condition had not improved, they had to experiment with medication.
“At the end of 2013, I took a bad turn. I started losing my appetite and obviously weight, which led to many doctor’s visits and change in medication,” she said.

The woman said living with a dysfunctional colon had taught her to enjoy what she ate when she was able to eat it and enjoy what she could do on a good day.
The fundraiser will be a Halloween-themed 5km run/walk on Friday October 20, with prizes awarded for best costumes along with goodie bag handovers and lucky draw prizes.
The run/walk will start at 6.15pm at the King William’s Town Golf Club. Entry forms are available at Eastern Cape Motors and Sutton Spar.
