Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality is calling for calm in the communities of Ducats and Nompumelelo following violent protests. It is all in our interest that we find each other and find solutions.
A meeting was held for the better part of today between leaders in the communities, SANCO, Office of the Premier, Provincial Human Settlements and Buffalo City took hours trying to find solutions to the challenges facing the area.
Buffalo City Metro was represented by politicians and all key and critical departments were represented. Such was the importance of the matter that other Municipal meetings like the Mayoral Committee were affected.
This demonstrates how serious we take the issue and how important is it to us that the people of Ducats and Nompumelelo are given the attention they deserve and attempt is made to transform their socio-economic conditions towards the better.
Based on the issues at raised by the communities, we have established a technical committee that will be comprised of technical work streams to look into each of the areas that residents are raising. These committees will work hand in hand with the leaders in the area.
This is to also assist the Council committee that is looking into the transfer of land from Amathole District Municipality and private owners so that we are able to unlock some of the bottle necks that are preventing.
The areas that the technical teams relate to Infrastructure (water, electricity and sanitation); Housing (rectification, tittle deeds & properties); Municipal services (cemeteries and halls)
We have made a commitment that we will be going back to the communities and give a comprehensive report of progress in all these areas on Thursday.
