According to the organiser of the tournament, Lungile Mbaru from the Home of Champions boxing club, the event was held in honour of Patrice Motsepe who donated R1 million towards the sport in 2016 through the Motsepe Foundation.

The foundation donated equipment to boxing clubs in the professional and amateur level in the Buffalo City.

At the time of the donation, Motsepe was in the province to visit the mother of Boxing Federation Champion, Zolani Tete, to hand over a donated prosthetic leg to the boxer’s mother.

“We told him our struggles and he promised to help and he did,” said Mbaru. “Through this tournament, this is our way of showing him that we have put the equipment to good use and to keep the spirit of boxing alive,” he added.
