Annual beauty pageant aims to uplift youth

THE annual Mr and Miss Mdantsane pageant will take place next week Wednesday at the Mdantsane Indoor Sports Centre from 10am to 6pm.

The young people contestants will be strutting the runway, showing off their handsome and beautiful looks and presentation skills.

Founder and event manager of the event, Siyasang Zwakala , said the pageant started in 2009 when he was a contestant, and won the title. He then took over in 2011 to continue this fun-filled event.

“We plan to make the event a success, as it is an annual event dedicated to uplifting the lives of the youth of Buffalo City Municipality (BCM), through arts and entertainment,” Zwakala said.

“Our goal as is to teach, as well as and create bring awareness among to the youth about things that affect us as the young people of Mdantsane. Also, to come up with ways of improving our livelihood and preventing criminal activities.”

Entries for the beauty pageant are still open until tomorrow Friday and those interested, can must go and register at the Mdantsane Arts Centre.

Zwakala said all the contestants will be provided with a basic grooming course prior to the final event.

The winning contestants will be required to work with Singalaka Models and Amahomba Entertainment at for future events when required.

The competition is open to both males and females between the ages of 12 and 25 years.

Zwakala said the contestants will be judged according to their confidence levels, how they present themselves on stage and how they answer the questions that they will be asked.

“We will be asking them about what is happening in the community of Mdantsane and how it is affecting the youth. The contestants must be able to come up with solutions for the problems,” he said.

Zwakala said that the winners will receive get the following prizes: First place – R1500, second place – R800 and third place – R600.

“The first-place winners will be ambassadors of Mdantsane, representing the township’s other events that take place in East London, and also help out in charity organisations,” he said.
